Eating out is part of the NYC culture. I love getting together with friends and family, but I don’t always agree with their restaurant choices. Here are some things I do before I eat out so I don’t become ‘that’ friend who constantly objects to restaurant selections.
I look up the menu online ahead of time to identify healthy options.
This does require a bit of effort, but at least I know if I have to eat a snack before I get to the restaurant.
If healthy options are limited, I end up choosing a salad with the dressing on the side. Dressings can be loaded with sugar and, boy, do some restaurants go dressing-happy on those salads.
My eyes go down to the ‘sides’ area. There are usually some great veggies in this section. Some of my favorite sides are sautéed mushrooms, broccoli rabe, and brussel sprouts.
Think beyond the menu options.
Depending on the restaurant, you can ask the waiter for a vegetarian or vegan option off the menu. The chef might be willing to steam some veggies.
Mind the portion size.
Find a friend who’s willing to split an entree.
